Fish Oil Supplements and Pregnancy - Should You Be Taking Them Or Not?
Fish oil supplements are not being recommended by many natural health experts during pregnancy.
But why? What is the connection between fish oil supplements and pregnancy? The reason is the omega-3 rich fatty acid content found in fish oils.
Many people in the main medical establishment are still anti-natural health products. You have to do your own due diligence and make your own choices. You should still speak to your doctor or health practitioner but quite the choice is yours ... and will affect the health of your baby.
I still remember when my own wife was pregnant with our first ... which happened to be twins. I had done a lot of research on omega-3's and realized that DHA and EPA (two types of omega-3's) are absolutely vital for the brain development of the fetus and nursing baby.
When I told the nurse of this, she advised us to not use fish oil supplements. As far as I was concerned, here was an uneducated nurse indoctrinated in conventional medicine giving advice on something she knew nothing about. Sounds harsh? So be it. It was my and my wife's choice to make and we decided that she use a purified fish oil supplement through her pregnancy.
5 1/2 years later our babies are now thriving young children.
We also had a baby girl later who was also brought up on my wife using purified fish oils during her pregnancy and nursing stage.
After doing my own due diligence I realized that the vast majority of us in the Western world simply did not eat enough foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids. Because the human brain is comprated of 60% fats and nearly half of that is DHA omega 3 fats, I knew that they were extremely important for my children (and us as adults as well).
When it comes to fish oil supplements and pregnancy I obviously have strong opinions. I'm not trying to force my opinions on you and you may choose different than I Did.
But just do your research. Remember: your decision, whether you are right or wrong, is going to affect the health of your baby forever.
Thankfully, as far as I'm concerned, many natural health experts ... such as naturopathic doctors and the like, do recommend pregnant women use a high quality omega 3 fish oil supplement. Their training is completely different from that of a "prescribe prescription drug after health symptoms develop" type mainstream medical profession.
